Some paintings are quiet. This one is a celebration that hasn't finished happening.
Built up in thick, sculptural layers of oil paint, After the Rain throws crimson, coral and gold blooms against a silver gray sky. Roses and peonies suggested more than drawn, all gesture and generosity. A single stem of paint descends to a jewel-toned knot at the base, like a bouquet remembered rather than arranged. The surface is half the experience: ridges and peaks of paint catch the light differently from every angle and every hour, so the piece keeps moving long after the weather that inspired it has passed.
Small in size, outsized in presence. A jewel box of a painting for an entry, a bedroom, or any wall that needs joy with a little weather in it.
21” x 13”, oil on canvas
